Kirsten Dunst turned down “American Beauty” role because she didn’t want to kiss Kevin Spacey
I can’t say that I’d want to kiss Kevin Spacey either, but I’m a he and she’s a she, so in her situation it’s a little different.
Kirsten Dunst, 15 at the time, was offered the role of Angela Hayes. Her character was the lusted after teenager sought by Kevin Spacey. Obviously she turned the role down. She told Entertainment Weekly magazine, “I was only 15 then and I didn’t want to kiss Kevin Spacey or be seen lying naked in those rose petals.”
…but wait.
Four years earlier, which makes her 11, she starred in “Interview with the Vampire” where she ‘had’ to kiss Brad Pitt. Tell me what 11-year-old girl doesn’t want to kiss Brad Pitt. Okay, maybe Kevin Spacey isn’t a stud like Brad Pitt, but seriously, it’s a movie. The roles are played and that’s it.
As for the rose petals scene, take a look at this risque pic from “Marie Antoinette”.
If she would of accepted the role in “American Beauty”, imagine what it would of done to her reputation. Oh well, now she’s Peter Parker’s love interest Mary Jane from Spider-Man. I guess everything worked out for her in the long run.
Excellent point with the IWAV. If my mind serves me right though, the kiss with Spacey was kinda steamy while the vampire kiss was essentially a little peck. Not to mention that it’s one thing to be starting our (IWAV was her first film) and making that decision differently when you have a couple of things under your belt. Either way, I don’t think that decision has hurt her career in any way.

If I was in that situation when I was 15, I’d of turned it down too.
Yes, the role was based on a 16 year old but I think it needed to be portrayed by an older girl like Mena Suvari, becuase it was such a full on scene. And in “Interview” it was just a peck.
And you’re also going on about how Kirsten Dunst didn’t want to do the nude scene with the roses in American Beauty, yet she’s got the nude scene in “Marie Antoinette” … Think of how much older she is now.
She was 15 then.
She’s 25 now.
24 when she made “Marie Antoinette”.
I think she made the right decision.

If i was her i would have said yes..i mean the movie was a big hit. She still would have probably been Spidermans love interest but her career would have sky rocketed.
