MGM is pushing out more sequels

In a press release earlier this morning, it was stated that MGM is planning to launch worldwide sales campaigns for the following movies: Legally Blonde 3, Cutting Edge 3, Into the Blue 2, WarGames 2, and Species 4.

Jessica Alba Reese Witherspoon

As much as I’m against sequels to movies, because they generally suck, this could be a smart move for MGM. The two Legally Blonde movies so far have together grossed $266,689,521 worldwide. With spending only $63 million total in production costs, the Legally Blonde Franchise seems to be making out quite well. The production budges was significantly higher for the Legally Blonde sequel, which I’m sure is due to paying Reese Witherspoon, but MGM has already announced that the third installment for the Legally Blonde series will not star Reese. Is this a good move? Could be. Too bad Reese is just so damn expensive these days.

When the original WarGames was released way back in ‘83 it grossed $79,567,667 domestically. That was 23 years ago. The movie was good and a lot of people enjoyed it. I think a well made sequel could do very well for MGM. Somehow, I don’t think it will be starring Matthew Broderick.

As for Into the Blue 2 and Species 4, they better change the formula for these movies. As I recall, the latest Species movie was a straight to DVD release and the original Into the Blue only grossed $44 million worldwide. I’m sure with the big names like Jessica Alba and Paul Walker their paychecks were quite hefty and probably pulled a lot of profits out of the movie.

I can honestly say though, the only MGM movie I’m looking forward to see is Casino Royale. Bond graces us with his presence this November and I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

I actually saw “Into the Blue” and it was cheesy and bad (in that ‘made for tv’ sort of bad) but still managed to get a few smiles from me and the hubby. Man, Alba looks hots in that little bikini of hers….unlikely that I’ll watch any of those direct to video offerings.
