This Weekend’s Movie Releases

This Friday, four movies hit the box office: Idlewild, How To Eat Fried Worms, Beerfest, and Invincible. Out of these four movies, one MIGHT do well — and let me tell you that’s a big might. The movie I’m talking about is Invincible.

Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg, is about Vince Papale and his struggles trying to make the cut to play with his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. As Papale battles through his hardships, he begins to watch his fantasies come to life before him.

Invincible is another one of those sports “feel good” movies and this is the reason I feel it will do so well opening weekend. No one wants to watch gangsters shoot it out in Idlewild or a bunch of kids placing bets on who can eat the most worms. Everyone wants a movie they can go to where they feel good about themselves and that they can relate to the characters portrayed in the movie. I’m sure Invincible won’t be any spectacular filmmaking and I’m sure it won’t have the best script, but take a look at some of the past sports movies like Remember the Titans, Glory Road, and Hoosiers, they’ve all done well at the box office.

As for me, do I need a sports “feel good” movie to make me feel good? Hell no! I need a movie with beer, girls, and more beer. That’s why Beerfest is first on my list of movies to see this weekend.

Not only that, but it’s directed by Jay Chandrasekhar. For those of you who don’t know who he is, he’s the guy who wrote, directed, and starred in Super Troopers. Recently, he’s directed some movies that fell short and were quite disappointing such as Club Dread and Dukes of Hazard, but Beerfest should live up to Super Trooper standards. If you have any doubts, watch the trailer and you will come a believer.
